Animal Taboos in Zhangjiajie

Based on existemic belief, different places own different taboos. Such as in America, black cats and number 13 are ominous. Tujia people in Zhangjiajie also have their own taboos,which abided by every generation.

Crow’s croak. For Tujia people it is sinister to hear the sound .And the way to break it is spitting forcefully.

Cuckoo’s cry. In Tujia culture,hear the cuckoo while walking or working means an overworked year. However, it is luck while sleeping.

Owl’s hoot. Owl is an ominous bird for Tujia people and it is said that its hoot indicates death.

Involvement of two snakes. Namely the mating of two snakes.Once catched the scene,there are two ways to avoid bad luck. One: take off the trousers and put it on head or cover the snakes; Or kill the two snakes with stones,sticks.

Welcome dogs in the new year.

Acoording to Tujia idioms, in the new year ,dog comes into home is a presage of wealth.On contrast, pig’s coming means poor, cats indicate death.
