Zhangjiajie Tujia Food Overview

Pepole in China’s mountainous regions are known for eating unique things and the Hunanese are fond of spicy food ,while Zhangjiajie people prefer both. As Zhangjiajie is a tourist destination ,many standard Chinese dishes and the famous ones of minorities are available here, such as Sauteed Preserved Pork, Dried Tofu Slices and Kung Pao Chicken. Most dishes are quite delicious, which will definitely add color to your journey in Zhangjiajie.

Tujia cuisines are predominated with dishes like Tujia Hot Pot, Fried Bee Eggs, and Tuajianiancai. Such Tujia specialties as ge fen(Kudzu root powder), rice wine, cold noodles and Ciba ( a kind of pie made from Glutinous rice) are tasty very much. In addition, “Tujia niancai” refers to the main dishes presented on the eve of the spring festival, including Steamed Meat , Chicken Soup with Chestnuts, Tujia Hot Pot and Sauteed Preserved Fish. At that time, Tujia people will reflect on the past and pay tribute to their ancestors. Dishes are usually placed at the center of the table so that everyone around the table can share them. And a Tujia hot pot usually is the favorite of all family members.

Other local specialties include Chicken Feet with Pickled Peppers, Mapo Tofu andGuotie(Pan-friedDumpling). For those fond of spicy food, try the sauteed beef with wild pepper. Breakfast generally consists of buns, noodles , dumplings , fried bread stick , soybean milk and Won ton.
