On July 29, the 2017 Hunan (Nanshan) Folk Song Festival and the Hunan-Guangxi Folk Custom Festival kicked off in Chengbu Miao Autonomous County, Shaoyang City. The festival gala consisted of three parts. Several singers performed at the gala, including six champion singers of the third national folk song competition, a Tibetan singer-songwriter, and a famous Chinese tenor. A press conference on July 14 announced that the 2017 Hunan (Nanshan) Folk Song Festival will be held in Chengbu Miao Autonomous County, Shaoyang City on July 28. The county is known as a cradle of folk songs since ancient times. On the sixth day of the sixth lunar month in 1740, Chengbu people initiated an uprising and sang folk songs to encourage the soldiers. From then on, the folk song festival has been passed down and become a festive celebration in the county. The annual festival has been held for 19 sessions since 1999. Three national folk song competitions have been organized. The county is committed to making the festival a Hunan cultural brand. The Mass Dragon Boat Finals, a part of the 13th China’s National Games, will be held on Liuye Lake, Changde City, between July 15 and 17.Hunan is known as the “Origin of Dragon Boat Festival”, and the “Cradle of Dragon Boat Race”. It organized annual provincial mass dragon boat races for four consecutive years, and the national Dragon Boat Contest (Changsha Area) this year. The Mass Dragon Boat Finals is the highest standard and largest of its kind in China.Hunan team together with other 23 teams, composing of more than 600 racers, will compete in the finals. Men’s and women’s teams, divided into 12-person or 22-person group, will respectively race in 100-meter, 200-meter, and 500-meter races.
