On July 1, at 9 pm, the flight departing from Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh City landed at Hunan’s Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport marking the official opening of the air route connecting the two cities. This is the second direct flight this year linking Zhangjiajie and Vietnam. The first one linked Zhangjiajie and Hanoi, Vietnam’s capital, which launched on May 21. The opening of these air routes will greatly contribute to the tourism between Zhangjiajie and Vietnam. Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon) is Vietnam’s largest city. It is the business and financial hub, with a history going back hundreds of years. It has Vietnam’s largest inland port and international airport. The city has French-influenced architecture, roads, and culture. The opening of the direct flight between Zhangjiajie and Ho Chi Minh will promote economic, cultural, and tourist exchanges and more deeply involve Zhangjiajie in the “Belt and Road" initiative. Vietnam’s VietJet Airline operates the service every Thursday and Sunday using an Airbus A320. The journey takes about four hours. It departs from Ho Chi Minh at 16:30 local time and arrives in Zhangjiajie at 20:30 local time. The return trip starts at 21:30 and lands at Ho Chi Minh at 1:45 the following day. According to Zhangjiajie Municipal Government, Zhangjiajie has already opened 6 international (regional) air routes. This will strengthen cooperation between domestic and international airlines on services like chartered airplanes, and continue to develop international (regional) air routes. The 2017 Hunan Autumn Trailwalker concluded successfully as the last trailwalker arrived at the Zhuzhou Sports Center around 6 pm of November 5. On 19 September, the Hunan Airport Management Group announced that the Zhangjiajie Hehua Airport had been approved by the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) and would be renamed Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport. It is Hunan’s second international airport.This renaming will increase its international recognition and reputation, and promote provincial economic and social development.The State Council approved the establishment of Zhangjiajie Airport in June 1997. It opened for foreign flights on 17 November 2011. It currently operates three regional flights to Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan; and, 17 international flights to destinations such as Bangkok, Djakarta, Cheju, and Busan.In 2016, it had 296,000 exit and entry passengers. Of which 17.4% were foreign passengers, nearly 40 times as many as in 2011.In January 2016, the State Council authorized the Zhangjiajie Airport to grant visas on arrival (VOA). It operates duty-free stores and its international freight depot serves American, European, and Australian flights. The Grand Theater of Changsha Meixihu International Culture & Arts Center partially opens to the public free of charge on August 31.The project is designed by Zaha Hadid, a world-famous British visual artist. Seen from high above, it looks like a blooming hibiscus mutabilis consisting of four fluid petals.It is the largest performance venue in the city with a total capacity of 1800 seats.
